Almost every process to study or migrate to an English-speaking country asks for a language test. Choosing well saves time and money, because not every test works for every application.
IELTS
The best known. It has two versions: Academic (to study) and General Training (to migrate and work). You can take it on paper or on a computer, and the speaking test is a conversation with an examiner.
PTE
Taken entirely on a computer and scored by an automated system, so results usually arrive within a few days. PTE Academic is the version for study and PTE Core is the one Canada accepts for Express Entry.
TOEFL iBT
Widely used to study in the United States and accepted by many universities worldwide. It is also valid for Australian visas, but it does not work for permanent residence in Canada.
Which one does each country accept?
- Australia: IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge, among others, for visas and universities.
- Canada (study): it depends on each institution; IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted.
- Canada (Express Entry): IELTS General Training, CELPIP or PTE Core.
- New Zealand: IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge, depending on the program.
Preparation tips
- Take a practice test to find your real level before booking.
- Train with the format: each test rewards different strategies.
- Remember that results are generally valid for two years.
