Australia, Canada and New Zealand are the favourite destinations for Latin Americans who want to study and work. All three offer a high quality of life and large Latin communities, but they are not the same. These are the questions we recommend answering before you decide.
1. What is your goal?
Learning English for six months is not the same as a postgraduate degree with plans to stay. If you want a path to residence, prioritise programs and cities that make it easier.
2. How much can you invest?
Add up tuition, living costs, health insurance and flights. Cities like Sydney, Toronto or Vancouver are more expensive than Brisbane, Montreal or Wellington.
3. How much will you be able to work?
All three countries allow part-time work during the semester and full time during breaks, but with different hour caps and conditions. Read our guide on working while you study.
4. What happens when you graduate?
Australia: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets you work after certain programs.
Canada: the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) gives Canadian work experience that counts towards Express Entry.
New Zealand: the Post-Study Work Visa lets you work after completing eligible programs.
Each visa has requirements on level, program length and field of study, so choose your course with this step in mind.
5. Where do you see yourself living?
Climate, city size and lifestyle matter more than it seems. Beach and sun in Sydney or Brisbane, snowy winters in Toronto and Montreal, nature and a relaxed pace in Auckland or Wellington.
