Studying a postgraduate degree abroad doesn't have to rely on your savings alone. There are full scholarships, partial university scholarships and education loans that, combined well, can cover a large share of tuition and living costs.
Full government scholarships
- Chevening (United Kingdom): one-year master's degrees for professionals with leadership potential and at least two years of work experience.
- Fulbright (United States): master's and PhD programs; in Colombia it is run by the Fulbright Commission.
- DAAD (Germany): postgraduate programs, many of them taught in English.
- Erasmus Mundus (European Union): joint master's degrees across two or more European countries.
University scholarships
Universities in Australia, Canada and New Zealand offer merit scholarships that take 10% to 50% off tuition. Many are awarded automatically with the offer, based on your grades; others require an essay.
Education loans
In Colombia, organisations such as Colfuturo (a scholarship-loan partly forgiven if you return to the country) and ICETEX fund postgraduate studies abroad. Combining a loan with a partial scholarship is the most common route.
Tips for a winning application
- Start early: most calls close 9 to 12 months before classes begin.
- Tell a story: your essay should connect your background, the chosen program and the impact you want to make.
- Recommendation letters from people who know your work closely, not just from senior titles.
- Certify your language level before applying: many scholarships ask for it from the first stage.
